I don't know what to do - Mum might already be stage 4 but she's refused all appointments. Dad's trying to look after her but she's being awful to him

Mum (76) got a diagnosis the week before Christmas. All indications are already stage 4.  But she's hospital phobic, agoraphobic and med related brain fogged. She's refused all appointments and doesn't recognise that she's even ill. Dad is trying to look after her but he's at the end of his rope.  She's being obnoxious and awful to him 24 hrs. He knows it's not her fault but it's ripping him up. Diagnosis came with a dvt so she's been bedridden for a couple of months. I'm having a daily sob about it.

  • Hi Joffers,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm so sorry to hear of the situation with your mum. This sounds incredibly difficult - of course for your dad and for you too.

Hopefully someone can speak to your mum's GP on her behalf - if this hasn't already happened - so you can discuss what help is available for your mum and to enable your dad to get support and a rest too.

If ever you want to talk things through with someone, we have nurses available. You can reach them on freephone 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

Macmillan are another option in terms of finding out about available support.

We're always here on the forum whenever you want to reach out to others, or just to write things down, and I hope that it can be helpful for you.

Do have a browse around, or you can use the search bar from the homepage, to find other discussions and people to connect with.

Do take care of yourself. Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
