Help - do I get a dog

Hi all

My husband has stage 4 cancer. I am caring for him at home until he goes back into a hospice to pass away. I do not know when this will be, it will probably be weeks sadly. My husband is immobile and needs a wheelchair. We have carers coming in twice a day. One of both our dreams was to get a dog. We have seen a 5 year old small (23kg) Labrador. She's from a breeder and really gentle, we both fell in love with her. She is fully trained. The breeder is lovely and has said they will have her back when things get worse until I can care for her again. I really want her, I'm an outdoorsy person who loves walking and feel she will be a focus going forward. A few friends have said she will be too much for me. Just wondered what everyone's thoughts are and if anyone has any experience please? Thank you all

  • Hi Waves,  I think a dog is a very good idea.  A puppy is a lot of hard work but a 5 year old labrador sounds ideal.  A dog will be therapy for both yourself and your husband.  I have stage 4 cancer and I have four dogs.  They are a lifeline for me as I get up and walk them every day and even now they are sleeping in bed next to me.  They give me so much comfort and it has not been a problem with my immune system.  A reason to get out of bed and look after them.  Good luck with your decision.

    Hi Lee

Thank you so much for your reply. Its lovely that you have 4 dogs, they sound like such a comfort to you. I think you have hit the nail on the head - dogs are a reason to get out of bed aren't they. Our Lab is being delivered tomorrow so had a quick dash to Pet at Home today to get all her bits.

Going through this journey makes decisions so difficult but we are going to go for it!

It all been very hard, as sure you know. Need something to focus on that doesn't involve medical things!
