Mums been diagnosed with secondary liver cancer

Hi All,

Newbie here.

My world’s family has recently been turned upside down when we found out my mum has liver cancer, which doctors think could potentially be secondary liver cancer. We are currently waiting for her to have a biopsy and then the results will tell us more.

I am so so scared, my every waking thought is consumed by my mums diagnosis. She’s 56 and really fit for her age which people keep saying will make a different and I pray it does. I guess I’m looking for advice on how people coped with hearing their loved one has cancer and any positive stories of people beating secondary liver cancer would be so so appreciated.

sending love to everyone battling this disease and their families. What a horrible horrible disease it is xx

  • Hello Tink-a-belle

I'm so sorry to hear that your Mum has recently been told that she likely has secondary liver cancer. I know how difficult this news will have been for you to hear and I can understand that you have lots of questions at the moment.

Hopefully, your Mum won't have to wait too long for the liver biopsy and the results will give the doctors the information they need to make a clear diagnosis and discuss treatment options with her.

We know that for many people this period of waiting and uncertainty is really difficult. If it would help to talk things through with one of our team of nurses you can call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. We also have some information on our website for family and friends of someone diagnosed with cancer.  You may find it useful to read through this.

Once your Mum has a clearer picture of her diagnosis and what options may be available to her then we can signpost you to some further sources of information that you might find useful.

Keep in touch Tink-a-belle and let us know how you're all doing. We're here for you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello Tink-a-belle,

its the news you do not want to hear and desperately worrying for all concerned but you shoiuld bear in mind the liver is an organ that can recover well from surgical intervention.

You do not mention where the primary cancer was but in my case it was from the bowel.l had 60% of my liver excised across the two lobes and was fortunate for the tumours to be in a position where surgery was possible.

The liver made a full recovery within the year and l am now ten years on from the operation.with no after effects, l was 63 years old at the time

If the tumour is in a position where surgery is not an option due to close proximity of crucial structures then alternative treatments are an option but l have no detailed knowledge of these.

Being fit is definitely a big plus and makes a huge difference to both the speed and success of treatment,

l hope your Mum gets positive news from here on,

    David
