Dad has oesophageal cancer

Hi, my dad has been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer, he's to have 3 different chemotherapy treatments in one in the next couple of weeks, after he's had a test from chemo he will then have surgery to remove the part of his oesothogus that has the tumor and will have further chemotherapy afterwards.

I just feel very alone, not sure how to cope myself keeping a brave face on for dad and supporting him with all his appointments

Id love to connect with carers going through similar circumstances. Maybe we can support eachother, I don't want to offload my worries onto the family were all dealing with this and I don't like to burden my family anymore

  • Hello Amber91,

Thank you for posting on Cancer Chat and I hope that's helped in some way. It sounds like you've been a great support to your dad, but I can imagine that caring for a parent would feel lonely sometimes. Please know that the emotions you're going through are normal and there is support out there. Don't be afraid to lean on people you can trust and we have some guidance for family friends and carers, including tips on looking after a loved one and looking after yourself. I hope this will be useful.

I'm sure members in a similar situation will reach out to you and the forum is always here for you whenever you need it and .

    Best wishes,

  • Hello Amber

First what a lucky dad to have you looking after him. It is very hard being strong all the time so well done for recognising that and reaching out.

I am old enough to have lost my parents already so I can relate to that but I am currently supporting Hubby with oesophageal cancer too

Each persons experience is unique to them of course but I have found here is a helpful place to chat.

Also I found Macmillian good for help with benefits etc aswell as information helplines

    Alongside CRUK.

    Also counsellor support very helpful

Take each day as it comes ask questions

I hope your dads treatment goes well for him...sending strength

  • Thank you for your kind words, I will check some more support out ️ I'm so sorry your husband is battling this nasty disease too  sending love to the both of you xx

  • Hello Amber91

Very sad to read your post about your dad.  I have lost my dad to Esophagus cancer and barely two years later I lost my husband to Junctional Esophagus cancer.

You are such a support to your dad.  This forum is so needed and a good place to connect to others for help and support.  Cancer research is also a wonderful support as has been mentioned and McMillan.  Another wonderful support are the Maggies Centres.   II you go onto the website and look at all the support in so many ways they can help.

I wish your dad you and your family love and strength take care x
