Close work friend has just received a cancer diagnosis, stage 4. How can I support them?

One of my close work colleagues has recently been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. It’s come as a huge shock—completely unexpected. I really want to support him in the best way I can, but I feel I don’t have enough knowledge, especially when it comes to the mental and emotional side of what he might be going through.

If anyone can recommend any articles, books, or resources that could help me be more supportive during this time, I’d be truly grateful. This is such a horrible situation, and I just want to be there for him in the right way.

  • Welcome to our forum, Garcia_,

I’m so sorry to hear about your close work friend’s diagnosis. It must have been a huge shock, and I can understand your wish to support him as best as you can during such a difficult time.

The fact that you are already thinking about how to be there for him shows that you care deeply, and that is already something very valuable. While it is not always easy to know what to say or do, simply being present and offering a listening ear can mean a great deal.

Many people find that reading about what others have experienced can give some insight, and there is plenty of that here on the forum. I also wanted to share this page from our website: Family, friends, carers and cancer - it may be helpful if you feel like having a read, as it includes some advice on how to support someone with cancer and also how to look after yourself during this time.

I hope this helps, and I’m sure your friend will appreciate your kindness and thoughtfulness.

    Best wishes to you both,
