Prostate cancer my dad

My dad has been diagnosed with prostate cancer today and I have so many questions but I’m too scared to speak to him about it. He has been told with horemone therapy and radiotherapy it will get rid of it as it has not spread and was caught very early. He has been advised not to have surgery because he is obese. I have all these questions in my head like will he get sick from the horemones and the radiotherapy and will this completely cure it or is he now at risk of it returning after the treatment? The cancer was literally found by chance with a psa blood test randomly done by his gp as it wasn’t due but they done one anyway. Also I have questions about my son he is a teenager but does this make him higher risk of prostate cancer as his grandad has it. Also my nephews and my brothers. Can anyone answer any of my questions here? I am sure there will be many many more questions as I process all of this.

  • Hi Tjayne, and a warm welcome to the forum though sorry you have to be here, your dad's prostate cancer being caught early, and by mistake, is very good news, and as your dad's team have said, his treatment will be to cure, sadly side effects are common but unique to us all, the one nearly all of us get is fatigue, so if your dad can do a little exercise, this will help him cope with that, I'm not an expert my friend, but have a talk to your dad's consultant about Brachytherapy, it's similar to hypofractionated radiotherapy, you get a higher dose over each session, usually only 6 as opposed to the usual 20, and as you get half the radiation dose in total more accurately delivered, side effects are fewer

Having a familial link to prostate cancer does double your risk.
