Treatment for non small cell lung cancer

My father was diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer in January 2023. It was identified as a solitary lesion in one of his lungs, which was surgically removed, and he was declared cancer-free. Unfortunately, microscopic disease later spread to his brain, where a single lesion was treated with radiotherapy. Following this, he was started on a treatment regimen of Pembrolizumab combined with Pemetrexed and Carboplatin. His response to the treatment has been excellent, with both brain and lung scans showing stable disease.

However, more recently, he has been experiencing a loss of taste in food. This is surprising, as only two weeks ago, his appetite and food intake were excellent. I am seeking advice on what might help resolve this issue. I do not believe it is related to the progression of the disease, as his most recent scan this week showed no significant changes compared to the end of November.

Any thoughts?

  • Hi T4TAFA,

It's great that your dad was declared cancer free after this lesion in his lungs was removed and that despite the microscopic spread to his brain, his response to radiotherapy and to his treatment of Pembrolizumab combined with Pemetrexed and Carboplatin was so good.

I am sorry to hear though that he has been experiencing loss of taste in food recently and there can be many reasons for that which would be worth investigating. It is reassuring that his most recent scan showed no significant changes but I can understand why you are worried and why you would want to find out what is causing his poor appetite. I think it would be worth bringing up the subject with his medical team or getting in touch with them and asking them for advice on this as I am sure they will be able to help and give you some answers as well as hopefully some solutions so that he finds taste in food again.

There is also information on our website which you might be interested in reading on taste changes and loss of appetite as well as tips for diet problems and these taste changes can be caused sometimes by the treatment itself so it's well worth discussing it with his medical team to find out exactly why it is happening to him now when he was enjoying his food just a couple of weeks ago.

Feel free also to get in touch with our cancer nurses on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and they will be happy to advise you further on this too.

I hope that your dad's appetite improves soon.
