Support for mum aged 80 who has just been diagnosed with ovarian cancer

My mum aged 80 has just been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. I live 250 miles away. She lives on her own. What support is available?

  • I am wondering the same thing as my mum is having a hysterectomy and is 80. She has dad but he is 81 and I am wondering what, if any community support is available too. I too live away.

  • Hello Al1777

I'm sorry to hear about your Mum's diagnosis. It's understandable that this may be a worrying time for you both.

Does your Mum have any family or friends that are local to her that are supporting her with attending appointments etc?

I presume that you're asking about caring support for your Mum. I'd suggest your Mum speak with her cancer nurse specialist or GP surgery to ask about how she can go about getting this support put into place. It may be that the GP surgery can give you some signposting but unless they have your Mum's permission to speak with you about her care then you might find it difficult to access services on her behalf.

If you want to talk with one of our nurses for some advice and support you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

    Best wishes,
