Advanced Prostrate Cancer

Absolutely devastated that my beloved husband has been diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer today. The gleason score is 8 and he starts hormone therapy on Thursday.

Anyone in the same position or can talk about how successful this treatment has been for them or someone they care for?

  • Hello AFLMF

Welcome to the forum although I'm sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis. It's obviously a very difficult time for you both at the moment and so whilst I'm sure other community members will stop by to say Hello and introduce themselves, I wanted to reply to give you some links that may be helpful.

We have some information about prostate cancer on our website that you may find helpful. I also wanted to let you know about this thread that  recently posted. Her husband is also living with a diagnosis of advanced prostate cancer. I'm going to tag in  to my reply as well. Eddie has been living with advanced prostate cancer now for nearly 2 years. I'm sure he will pop along to offer some support but you can read more about his journey by clicking on his name tag.

The next few days and weeks will undoubtedly feel overwhelming for both of you. Know that the Cancer Chat community is here to listen and offer any support that we can. If it would help to talk to one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to offer any advice, information and support they can.

I hope this helps AFLMF. Keep in touch and let us know how you're both managing.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you Jenn

    It's terrifying

  • It can be absolutely terrifying AFLMF, particularly in the first few days and weeks.

Please try to avoid spending too much time online researching things as that will leave you feeling even more worried.

Hopefully the sun is shining wherever you and your husband are this evening. Take the opportunity to get out for a walk to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air, and clear your head a little. Maybe sit in the garden with a cuppa, or something else if that takes your fancy.

You will hopefully soon find your feet again and move forward with this one step at a time.

    Best wishes,

  •  Hi AFLMF and a warm welcome from me though sorry you have to be here. and your husband has prostate cancer PCa. I understand how awful you are feeling, we have all been through what you are just starting. I fist want to repeat what Jenn said please don't google, I know it's normal to try to understand what your husband has so stick to trusted sites like ours, prostatecanceruk or Macmillan. where you will only get the facts. Almost everyone responds well to hormone therapy HT is given to  stop your production of testosterone which is what the cancer needs to grow so no testosterone the cancer will not only stop growing but hopefully shrink as well. so when the next stage of treatment starts it will be much more effective, As moderator Jenn said I have advanced PCa stage 4 and Gleason 10, diagnosed nearly 2 years ago HT straight away and radiotherapy RT a few months later, AFLMF, I know we are both T4, but my cancer is a rare and very aggressive one, when treatment started it had already metastasised "spread" to 8 other parts of my body, though luckily only locally and my most recent scan has shown the cancer is no longer detectable in 3 organs in 3 more it has shrunk by over 80%, 1 was removed very recently and my prostate and seminal vesicles are producing almost zero PSA and my oncologist has given me 5 more years, though with a good possibility of further treatment later more time is possible, I know guys with T4 PCa who are still doing well 10 years after diagnosis and with new treatments and medicines being developed all the time the outlook can only get better, A little advice HT comes with side effects, not everyone gets them, but almost everyone will get fatigue and if your husband can get a little fitter before it starts it will help him through treatment. best wishes.

Thank you so much for taking the time reply, I really do appreciate it!

At a time when we both feel so lost, it is a little heartening to hear that there are positive stories out there.

    Thank you

Morning AFLMF, I was in healthcare 15 years, 5 of which were in end of life cancer care and it still took me some time to come to terms with my diagnosis, thing's will get a little easier, and your husband will be able to have chemotherapy and/or surgery if needed, options unavailable to me for medical reasons. take care both of you. Hi AFLMF, I am doing really well, 1 or 2 niggles, but enjoying life doing the things we all do, was lucky to retire early, before my cancer diagnosis, even getting married later in the year, life does go on,
