My husband has secondary liver and stomach cancer .

Hi , I’m writing this as at the moment I’m feeling lost and alone . My husband was diagnosed with bowel cancer in November 2020 which was successful treated with surgery and chemotherapy. Following a scan 6 months later we found out that the cancer had returned and was now in his liver and stomach lining , it was decided that because of the cancer in his stomach liver surgery was not an option . He’s being having chemotherapy and immunotherapy for the past 3 years but after having an MRI last December it showed that the tumors in his liver were still growing and were more pronounced so his Oncologist decided to discontinue the chemo that he’d been having as it was no longer effective. He is now taking tablets and was told that if they work they will do so for 6 months . There are no hospital appointments as such anymore as District Nurses come to the house to take his bloods and his medication gets delivered by courier . I have no one to speak to answer questions that I have as my husband isn’t willing for me to speak to his Cancer Nurse . He’s losing weight , is constantly tired and has told me he’s had enough and feels like he’s deteriorating. I’m struggling as everything I suggest or do to try and help him he brushes aside . He’s been having pains in his back for the past  6 weeks but won’t seek any advice / treatment for it . Can anyone relate to this , I’m really struggling and feel like I’m swimming around in the dark .

  • Hi

I totally relate to what you are going through. My sister was diagnosed with bowel cancer 2 years ago. After surgery, she was told that the cancer had gone to the lymph nodes and liver. She had chemo for 11 months. But 6 months later the cancer has spread to the  lining of the stomach, lungs and right kidney. She has been offered more chemo but she has declined it because she is too weak.

And the trauma from the previous chemo has affected her so much( DVT, pain and numbness in both legs.) She asked her oncologist for another treatment other than chemo but he told her that she cannot have immunotherapy. Am not sure why she is being denied this treatment.

.How come your husband was offered immunotherapy  She is now at home using morphine for pain relief.I am lost and confused too.

Lets stay positive. It’s not easy but that is the only way to cope each day. It’s a step by step journey.

  • Hi , thank you for responding to my post . I am so sorry to hear about your sister’s cancers . My husband was offered immunotherapy last year when his liver tumors had started to shrink , but after having a routine MRI I showed that the tumors had started to grow again . I am trying to stay positive but it’s really tough .
