Supporting my partner with bad news

Hello my partner is 55 and was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in Nov he has been having weekly chemo but has been really unwell throughout last week he was unable to have treatment as he was unwell with very low platelets. He has now been admitted with pneumonia and is poorly. He has told me he doesn’t want to continue with his chemo he’s had enough, Today I was told that his cancer is very high risk and his treatment needs to change I am worried that when we tell him tomorrow he will refuse and I don’t know how to support him. I feel so sad that he is going through this horrendous time and I feel totally useless. I know we are not alone  and my heart goes out to everyone facing this horrible disease xx

  • Hello Goldfish123

I'm sorry to hear about all that your partner has been through. It's obviously been a difficult time for you both and it's understandable that he has recently said he's had enough of treatment.

How did the appointment go yesterday? I hope that the team was able to give you both some reassurance about the next steps whatever choice your partner has made regarding treatment.

If it would help to talk to one of our nurses for some support you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

Sending you both my best wishes,

  • Thanks for your reply. So today we were told that he’s developed leukaemia and the aggressive chemo will start on Monday. Actually he took it well and has agreed to having the treatment which has made me feel better. We have to try everything don’t we but ultimately it’s his choice and I totally respect that and will be with him every step of the way whatever he decides and whatever happens. Xx
