Wife with terminal cancer

My wife was diagnosed with anal cancer last year and has radiotherapy. At first scan post treatment she was clear, but at the second, at six months, we were told it had spread

She started chemo, but had a bad reaction and was hospitalised. After a pause they restarted at a lower dose, and had another bad reaction.

This week we saw her specialist who told us it would be unfair to her, and pointless to try again, so she now has months left.

We are both very emotional as expected, but is like to know if it is normal for me as her carer to bed having selfish thoughts about after?

I'm feeling very guilty as I want to just concentrate on making what's left of her life as good as it can possibly be, and I cannot believe I'm thinking of myself at such a time

  • Update on my wife. We are very lucky living in Cambridge, as my wife is now under the Arthur Rank hospice, which is amazing. Her dedicated nurse is doing everything she can to get her pain under control, and she has an appointment with the pain clinic this week which may lead to a nerve block. This would make her life so much more bearable, as the pain is extremely debilitating.

Also, they have help for carers, and I should soon be able to go to the hospital to talk through options.

I'm still exhausted, but with all this help things may pick up whilst we can still enjoy some of the time we have left

I am very sorry for all your wife is going through and yourself,  its such a sad and difficult time,  I lost my husband nearly 8 years ago to Junctional Esophagus Cancer.  I think its normal to have so many emotions and thoughts for your wife for yourself. you are not alone in these thoughts,  Your message clearly shows your love and devotion to your wife.  Its goos to hear that your wife and yourself now have the support of your Hospice.  My husband too had the care of our local Prospect Hospice.  Amazing just as you say,  Couldnt have got through without them,    Its good to hear they are working on getting her pain undercontrol.  Our Hospice was a trenendous support to my huband and myself and our family both ay home during our stay in the hospice and afterwards.  I an so glad you have the support of your Arthur Rank Hospice,  I hope you both get quality time together as you say live everyday for that day make them all count say everything you want to say.  I am so sorry that your going through this.  Dont be hard on yourself its all such a shock and so hard to watch and so many changes and emotions.  I find this forum a great deal of comfort still now too.

My thoughts and wishes to you and your wife take care
