Wigs

What are the NHS wigs like .our daughter is having more chemo.and immunotherapy and is losing her lovely blond curly hair it's heart breaking lost for words at moment

  • Hi Buster! I think provisions for wigs vary from one NHS Trust to another. I can tell you about my personal experience but things may be different where you are. I had a contribution of £130 towards a wig. There was only one place I could go to get it and as the one I liked best was £180, I paid the extra £50. That was 18 months ago when Covid was still restricting things. I was in my hospital yesterday and popped into the MacMillan centre and was told that there are now wigs available on the oncology unit for a small donation. Unfortunately my hair is very reluctant to return so the next time in the hospital I am going to have a look and see if there's anything that suits me.

Please don't fret too much about your daughters hair loss. There are some lovely hats in the shops at the moment and personally I have perfected the art of tying a headscarf and regularly receive compliments on them. Only last week, a total stranger came up to me in Tesco to tell me how much she liked my headgear. You don't tell me your daughters age and I guess if she's young it may distress her more than it did me (Im in my early 60's) but it really is a small sacrifice to make in the bigger scheme of things. Tell her to look upon her hair loss as a badge of honour if you like. You can help her choose some headscarves ( I recommend Fairygate ones from Amazon) or fun hats ( I have a really cute cat hat with ears).

Keep positive, take one day at a time and I wish your daughter all the very best with her treatment. As for you, you keep positive too even though its obviously a difficult time for you too. Remember, if NHS wigs aren't available in your area there are some brilliant alternatives. I get my wig out on high days and holidays but it's itchy and hot and to be perfectly truthful, I am much more comfortable in a headscarf.

Sorry bit of a rambling reply but I hope I have helped you to see that wig or no wig, you have a beautiful daughter.

Sending positive vibes your way, take care, Mog, xx

  • Hi, I am 61 and still worried about losing my hair when my chemo starts. I decided this week to pop into a shop locally that sells wigs. The ladies were lovely and very reassuring. They accept the vouchers given by the hospital and talked me through everything. It gave me back the feeling of control, and now I feel much more confident moving forward. I wish your daughter well in her journey moving forward. Xx
