Feeling Abandoned

Hi all.

My mum was diagnosed with liver cancer that has spread to one lung in November. She had a liver biopsy that came back inconclusive. We then have had to wait another five weeks to have a second which we’re now waiting for the results of.

It feels like we have been abandoned. Mum was admitted to hospital last week for her second biopsy plus a general check up. All the staff were vague and even on discharge I felt we were told nothing.

This weekend she became unwell and I had to have out of hours doctors out twice. She has a urine infection.

She was never supposed to be living with me. We know she may only have a few months to live at best but the Macmillan nurses seem to have abandoned us. I was promised she could have an assessment by the palliative care nurses to determine if she could live at home with support (she lives 50 miles from me) but despite asking repeatedly I’ve heard nothing.

I have to ring them multiple times a day to get any response from them. I should add mum also has early stage dementia and I am her sole carer. It has made me ill and I had a breakdown and have now been off work sick for three weeks plus looking after her.

I’m exhausted and just don’t know where to turn or what to do.

  • A very warm welcome to the forum Enjaydee although I'm so sorry to read your post.

I can't begin to imagine how upsetting and frustrating this must be for you when all you want to do is provide the best care possible for your mum.

We do have some information about other services and support that may be available to you and your mum at this time, but for further information and advice, please give our cancer nurses a call. They're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they will do all they can to help.

You are not alone Enjaydee. We are thinking of you and sending all our strength and support your way.

    Kind regards,
