Palliative chemo

My partner is receiving palliative chemo for metastasised bowel cancer, I’m not wishing our time away and we are trying to make the most of the time we have but how long can someone continue on palliative chemo?? We’re 18 months in and still going. Struggling with all the uncertainty

  • The simple answer is, how long is a piece of string?

There's a ton of folk here with years under their belt, there's folk reaching and surpassed a decade. Kinda depends on how well they're responding to treatment and general health. Probably the best person to ask for a guesstimate would be the treating doctor.

  • I know how difficult it is. But beware the Macmillan nurses. We were put in touch with them about side effect pain. Got a phone call and they said this wasnt their field (fair enough ) Then she said do you want me to come and talk to you about the future (she meant when you die) She spoke to myself and husband like we were 2 year old or had dementia (Aw bless, and what do you like to be called.) I cannot tell you how angry it made me. We are not stupid we know the situation, being spoken to like this doesnt help.

I wish you all the best for the future. I suppose all we can try and do is live one day at a time. Easier said than done.

  • Thanks we had a bad experience with Macmillan too. They kept asking what we wanted and we kept saying for mum to be at home then a couple of days later they’d come and ask the same thing again, no one  acted or actually passed on the information . Needless tO say she died in the hospital :( now having to watch partner go throu it too, life sucks

  • So sorry to hear about mum. Hope you and your partner have many more years. x

  • Easier said than done, that sums it up. I am sorry about your husband's illness and about you, the roles assigned to us are constant. My first experience with the Macmillan nurse was good, the second so bad that I won't ring the support line again. My secondary bone cancer has been diagnosed recently. At the end of the second phone call, I felt frustrated and angry, being told this and that, including 999 call. So yes, beware, there is enough on our plate.
