Radical neck dissection

Hi my husband is undergoing his surgery(radical neck dissection) for secondary melanoma this week. I'm so worried and am not sleeping. I'm not sure what to expect and how he will recover, I don't think I've ever been as scared. Hopefully he'll get through with no complications and recover fully...my anxiety is through the roof but I'm being positive around him cause I know he's terrified. We lost his mum and brother last year to cancer and don't think we'll cope going through that again...any words of support would be gratefully appreciated

  • Hello MrsSmith211 and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

I noticed you said your husband was due to have surgery this week so I just wanted to wish you both the very best of luck and let you know we're thinking of you.

It's completely understandable why you're both feeling rather anxious about this, so do be kind to yourselves and remember that you are not alone as many of our members have been in this position and hopefully some of them will be along soon to share their experiences and advice.

If either of you would like to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses, they're also available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very supportive, and insightful, and they'll do all to reassure you and answer any questions you may have about his surgery.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi

Thank you so much for replying hopefully things will go well but I have taken the telephone numbers for future reference

  • Yes, positive thinking, when you can, will really help during this anxious time.

You're very welcome to update us on your husband's situation after his operation if you like and talk about how you're feeling as well as it's always nice, and reassuring, to have a safe space to discuss what you're going through on this challenging journey.

    Best wishes to you both,
