My boyfriend has cancer

My boyfriend of 10 years was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer 4 months ago out of the blue and I can't bear it. I can't think about anything else, I'm exhausted trying to pretend I'm ok because I don't want to make him or my family upset or worried. The truth is I feel like I'm waking up to a nightmare every day and I'm really scared. I feel like because I've been able to hold back the tears until I'm alone, no one understands to what extent this is destroying me. I can't bear the thought of losing my best friend.

  • Hi you don't say what type of cancer and where its gone, alot of stage 4 is treatable.

I was diagnosed with prostate cancer gone to lymph node's pelvis, spine, ribs and a lung in 2016.

Type and where can make a big difference to treatment options. Please don't think once someone gets cancer that's it.

    Hope others will join soon.

  • Hi Billy,

Thank you for replying, your message is very positive. It is bile duct cancer which has spread to the liver, gall bladder and lymph nodes

He hasn't started any treatment yet which is frustrating but he's been waiting for a clinical trial (lots of delays, lost biopsy etc). He is finally due to start next week but has to bring his calcium levels down first.

Can I ask what treatment you've had so far?

  • Hi i started with hormone therapy tablets daily and three monthly injection as my cancer feeds on male hormone, the tablets and injection are female so they help shrink cancer.,also had chemotherapy to try to shrink or kill more cancer,  my uninvited guest is still there and we fight now and again so change of meds but mainly live in harmony. Managing ok getting older doesn't help, 64 when diagnosed thinking about retirement and enjoying life 71 now still positive and sure, im also a carer for my wife (Brenda),she has dementia and other brain problems but we manage.

If you go to the top of your post the blue line open search you can enter what you look for and you will get a list. Or touch on the avatar or name should give you details about that person.

Wishing him all the luck in the world and a great future with you.

  • Hi Billy,

I'm so glad you found a treatment that seems as though is working well for you! Thank you for the tips, I'm new to this macmillan chat but have found our short conversation very reassuring and hopeful. I've just read your bio, wishing you and your wife all the best, sounds like you're doing an amazing job caring for her.
