How big is big for a bowel tumour?

My mother has been confirmed with having a 4cm bowel tumour. Is that too large to be a stage 1?

What are the options? The nurse said it was "too soon to talk about surgery". I'd rather she just told me that surgery isn't an option if thats the case?

  • I'm sorry to hear your mother has a 4cm bowel tumour Worriedwellster.

I know this must be worrying so if you'd like to discuss this in more detail with one of our cancer nurses, they'll be available next week on 0808 800 4040 between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very insightful and will do all they can to answer your questions and put your mind at ease.

Hopefully some of our members who have been in a similar situation will offer their thoughts and advice to you soon but in the meantime, we're thinking of you and hope it won't be long until you find out what happens next.

    All the best,

  • Hello,

sorry to read about your Mum, l assume that the tumour has been confirmed as cancerous. 4cm would suggest it would be in the stage two range, the size is not so important as the degree of  penetration of the bowel wall. Too soon for surgery could point to chemo/radiotherapy to stop the spread and shrink the tumour before surgery If  that is required at a later date. That was the case with myself ten years ago when diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer with subsequent spread to the liver.

Its early days and although its all too easy to think of the worst, please remember you only usually hear of the bad outcomes, the good ones are far too busy getting on with life to post here.Since every cancer is different, you really have to wait for your Mums individual assessment and subsequent action plan, meanwhile the good news is that the wheels are in motion and once all the multi disciplinary team have had their meeting, you will have a clearer picture of the road ahead.

hopefully you should hear within a few weeks,in the meantime stay calm and refrain from second guessing the outcome,

                                           best wishes,

                                                               David

  • Hello Hanna606,

sorry for the delayed reply but l have just had a brief hospital stay as my bowel decided to go on strike and stop working, fifth time now in eight years, but it always manages to kick back into life  within 36 hours. Very painful at the time so thank goodness for morphine to see you through the first 24 hours. to put this in perspective a 60 hour stay in hospital saw me back home where l picked up the tasks l had previously left straightaway

My treatment was 30 days chemo/radiotherapy pre surgery---bowel resection/liver resection with stoma----18 weeks post surgery chemo---stoma reversal.Had a very interesting and highly active five year period following reversal, but nothing that really stopped me from carrying on with my livestock farming as before. As always with major surgical intervention you gain a few extra passengers you would rather not have, but with a few adjustments and a get on with it mentality, nothing that really stops you from achieving.

Hope your Husband continues with his progress, its always good to hear of others on the path to recovery,

                                                       Take care,

                                                                          David
