My Husbands Post Cancer Care

Hi There!

My husband had bowel cancer last year and went into have the tumour removed at the beginning of this year in January. The operation went very well and they managed to get all the cancer out. It has however, resorted in him having to wear a stoma bag permanently which he manages fine and has learned to live with. His recent outpatient follow up appointment have been positive but he recently had a follow up appointment with his surgeon and she took blood and took 4 or 5 samples from him and he got a letter back today to say that the chemical in possible bowel cancers had risen a wee bit in his system and they want to book him in for a scan earlier than expected. He was due a follow up scan near the end of this year. Obviously this has set him back slightly as he has been doing really well in his recovery getting his mobility back etc but he and myself and now really worried that this could be the cancer coming back. I am trying to be positive in thinking that it is something they want to catch that could potentially cause a re-occurrence. For the fact she she said `a wee bit` sounds positive but it is still a worry. Is this what it means?

  • Hi VickyM21,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can understand this must be concerning - I know it's not easy to deal with this kind of uncertainty and a wait for further information.

It's of course hard to advise on what the situation may be, but it's good that they are monitoring things and hopefully it won't be too long until the appointment to find out more.

I'm sure it will be hard not to worry, but try to take things a day a time while you wait.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Hello!

Thanks for your reply Ben. I have just got off the phone with the colecterol nurse specialist who works alongside the surgeon and she tried to explain what is happening. She said it is not necessarily the cancer returning but she said its to do with the cancer markers and the chemical in one (I think thats what she meant) was slightly elevated and that they need to keep an eye on this and not just ignore it. Saying `slightly` she said it could be something else causing it but they need to keep themselves right and they will only know once a CT scan has been done which they are going to arrange for Jame in due course so good in a way that they are picking up on it. James also has Type 2 Diabetes so don't know if it could be something to do with that either but as the nurse said its only a CT scan that can decide what it is. Will keep you updated.
