What are the survival chances of advanced Pancreatic cancer?

Hi I was just wondering if anyone could give me any advice or help, words of support....anything at all! My mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer which has spread to the liver. They have said they cannot operate but will be offered chemo once they have done the biopsies etc.

I have tried to research survival chances, etc but all the websites say different things. I'm assuming if it's already spread to the liver then it's classed as stage 4?

I don't really know what I'm asking here or wanting to know but I am an actual mess right now and I don't know what to do

  • Hi, I'm sorry to hear about your mum. I'm actually in the same boat as you. My 73 year old mum has pancreatic cancer which has spread to her liver and just found out it has spread to her stomach. Back in mid March my mum had a stomach ulcer and doctors took sample cells. At the time they said they had no results.

my mum had her first oncology appointment on Thursday, and that's when we found out the cells taken from her stomach contained cancer cells. I was and still am angry that the doctors didn't communicate this as soon as they known, and only told us at the oncology appointment last week.

been told my mum pancreatic cancer is advanced and stage 4. She cannot be operated on as the cancer has already spread. She is on palltive chemo. Waiting for my mum to start chemo and will be given the drug Gemcitabine & nab-paclitaxel

unfortunately with pancreatic cancer there is no cure. The pancreatic cancer helpline are brilliant. They provide information about PC and survival rate etc. I did find it hard when they told me, but at the same time I wanted to know what the reality is and what to expect and prepare myself mentally. Im so close to mum and that's why I'm finding it so hard. That's why I find joining forums helping me through this.

I've been honestly a mess myself, and cried nearly everyday since finding out my mums diagnosis back in mid March. I'm planning my leaving my job in London and moving back home with my parents. At the age of 36, I thought I wouldn't be in this situation, but my family Are so important to me, I want to be there for them and care for them.

to find more information about pancreatic cancer, honestly contact the pancreatic cancer uk, they have specialist nurses who can answer your queries. I've called them twice plus it's anonymous.

Sending positive vibes to you and your family

    x

  • Thank you so much for your reply. I'm sorry that you are going through this with your mum too. It's absolutely awful and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Ironically, my mum has also been through this as her mum (my grandma) was diagnosed with the same thing and passed away around 18months after being diagnosed.

Me & my mum are extremely close, we live 3 doors apart and see each other every day. I genuinely don't know how my children, siblings and  myself will survive without her.

Mum was diagnosed last Monday. After having an 'uncomfortable' type of feeling in her side, feeling a bit rubbish etc she went to A&E, they found markers in her blood, sent her for a scan where they found shadows on her liver. From there it went to having a CT scan and being diagnosed. Since the diagnosis nothing more has really been said. They sent her for some bloods doing a few days after & said they need to do a liver biopsy but never really said anything else. I need a step by step plan with a timescale to be able to sort things out in my head and prepare myself (and mum)  in the days, weeks, months and hopefully years to come.

I will definitely get in touch with the Pancreatic cancer team and see if they can shed some light into what to expect. I know everyone's journey is different so they can't be specific but if I get as much info as I can at least I'll be more prepared.

Many thanks again for your reply & I wish you and your mum the best in this difficult time xx
