Friend with very recent diagnosis stage 4 cancer - help

Hi all - i've a friend who is struggling with the shock of sudden diagnosis cancer, and their resilience has taken a real tumble in last few days - they've not got the wherewithal recently to contact cancer support places - I was wondering, if anyone knew of a support place that might contact them? I expect it's a no, as it's not the way usually things work, but I said I'd put it out there and ask for them. Thank you.

  • Hi,

If your friend lives near a Maggie's Centre they can call in, no appointment necessary for support.

Otherwise, I think he/she must make the first move. Macmillan has a helpline and their own designated nurse should be able to advise them about peer to peer support. For my first diagnosis of breast cancer I found the forums brilliant for support ( Breast Cancer Now) and also their own telephone peerto peer support .Many specific cancer sites have helplines.

If your friend uses social media Twitter is a good place to find other stage 4 people.

Hope your friend finds some help and support really soon

    Best wishes,

    Margarita

  • Hi your friend should have been given information and a phone number for a cancer nurse"normally Macmillan"but can vary incase any information wanted. I was given my cancer diagnosis and within minutes saw a nurse incase I wanted information.

im stage 4,was diagnosed Feb 2016 others were diagnosed years before me .

  • Many thanks, Margarita. That's useful . Dan

  • Hi Billy - thanks for that - Yep, they've got the info - just are not in a good emotional place to reach out. Macmillan have come back to me with some ideas and I think they'll encourage my friend. Thanks!
