Vaginal lump

Hi,

Around three months ago, I felt like something was leaking/slipping out of my vagina. I was close to my period time, so I didn't think much of it.

Then I realised I have a lump at the entrance of my vagina. It's kinda in the middle and the right side of my labia is a little swollen.

The lump isn't painful and sometimes it appears to move back into the vagina and the entrance is more clear, and at other times, it moves closer to the enterance. It doesn't come out, the closest it gets to the enterance is about half an inch inside.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows what this could be? I'm not sexually active and I've had this lump for almost 4 months now. I get my periods as normal.

With covid raging, it's hard to see a doctor as well.

  • Hello there,

Try not to worry, cancer in someone younger for example, would be unlikely and there is a good chance this could be something like a bartholin cyst that are harmless and usually settle by themselves. Try taking some tepid baths, as this can help. You could try applying some antiseptic cream if it is sore.

If something like this persists and doesn't go away, it is always best to arrange an appointment to get it checked out by your GP in case it needs treatment. You can ask to see a female doctor if it makes it easier.

    Take care

  • Many thanks for your reply!

Ive been monitoring my symptoms for a few months now. I can now confirm the lump only appears a week before my period and disappears soon after it's over or a few days into my period. Any ideas of what it might be? It's usually accompanied by itching and swelling too.

    Many thanks in advance!

  • Hello and thanks for the reply

We can't really say what this is but as it seems to come and go it is unlikely to be anything serious. It may be linked to hormone levels, which is why it seems to appear before a period and then goes but I can't say for sure.

Itchiness and swelling around the genitals can also be linked to infection such as thrush ( a fungal infection), irritation or sensitivity. Carrying out good personal hygiene avoiding perfumed products and wearing cool cotton underwear can also help.

If you remain worried I suggest you speak to your GP so they can assess you and if needed examine and arrange some more tests.

    All the best
