Breast lump.. Help? I'm scared.

Hi, I'm a 20 year old trans man that for the last few months have had a lump in my left breast (just writing this makes me so uncomfortable, I hate my body) in the upper outer quadrant. It's pretty big, maybe 1.5-2" and moves around. Pain comes and goes. Sometimes it hurts, sometimes it's normal. Its been there maybe 3 or 4 months, I don't think it has changed in size.     I'm very, very, reluctant to tell anyone. I don't like talking about anything to do with my body, and I've never ever had my top off in front of another person, never mind letting someone feel it. I'm not even registered with the doctors here (I moved in with my grandad during covid) and even if I did if I leave the house without my dog it would be very suspicious.

I have severe social anxiety. There is nothing worse to me than going to the doctors. I don't know what to do. My gran was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019 and overcame it. I just don't want to do that. I can't even get help to transition because I hate talking to people about all this.

***, I'm at a loss. I don't know what to do.

I'm so sorry, I don't know where else to go.

  • Oh bless you, you've taken a big step just coming on here. I urge you to register with a GP, that's the next step...it's easy peasy I promise you, you only have to fill in a form ( unless of course it's feasible to go to your old GP)?

There may even be a walk in breast clinic in your area, many places have them. A good old google search will help you with that one.

There is every chance the lump is nothing but to be 100% sure you really need it looking at by a professional. Getting to see a doctor will help open many doors for you, not only for the lump but with your anxiety and transition...they can refer you to talking therapies and maybe even meds to help you....there is help out there, reach out.....If everything feels impossible try giving the Samaritans a call, just having someone listening to you can help...116123 ️ ️ ️ ️

  • Hello Duckie and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to learn about your circumstances and this lump that is causing some concern.

You have probably already read on other posts that no one here on Cancer Chat can tell anyone what is causing a lump so our advice has to be to get checked out by a GP.  The NHS website explains how to register with one if you need to,

    www.nhs.uk/.../

GPs speak to people about everything and are used to discussing difficult issues that people feel self conscious about and putting them at ease. I agree with Marilyn that seeing the GP could open many doors for you and not just to sort out this lump, so please do pluck up your courage and arrange an appointment.

I am not so sure about walk in breast clinics,  you usually need to be referred by your GP if they think it is necessary after an  assessment. Breast cancer isn't common in 20 year olds so there is a good chance that this lump has another explanation but we would still advise you to get it checked out.

Sometimes life can seem overwhelming, but as Marilyn says there is help available. You have taken the first step by posting here, try taking a few more little steps, one at a time, to get the help you need.

If you want to talk anything over please do give us a call, we are here weekdays from 9-5, and our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040.

    Wishing you the best,

    Julia
