Glioma

My husband was diagnosed with a high grade Gllioma on 15.9.21, having been admitted to hospial on 23.8.21 with a suspected stroke.  He has been told that surgery is not an option as the tumour is too far spread and neither is chemo or radiotherapy.  He was discharged to home for pallative care.

No one has given me any idea of the prognosis and I am a person who has to plan ahead, I asked if I should take time off work as I had 4 weeks due, I was told to get a sicknote.  I did read that without treatment a GBM diagnosis was 2 to 3 months, the distrcit nurse told me some patients showed no sysmptoms.  We had an appointment with the Neurologist a week after dischagre (this was optional).  He showed us the scan and explained it was too far spread for treament.  I asked himthe prognois but his response was not very clear.

I would much rather know as this would help me deal with this better, surely they must have had similar situations and some idea, I told him I had read, 2-3 months without treatment and 1 year with, he just said something like, "the earlier of the latter" so not sure what that meant, I held up 2 figures so my husband couldn't see and he said yes.  We are now four weeks on and my husband is on 8mg of steroids each day which makes a big difference to the confustion he has with words.  He gets very tired, but pushes himself.  When the nurses phone to ask how he is, he always responds "I am fine".

I don't want to hold anyone to anything, just want to know what knowledge they have of a person in this situation.  My husband is 64years of age.

  • Hello there

I am so sorry to hear about your husband's situation and appreciate how difficult this time must be for you.

I'm afraid to say it is the team involved in your husband's care who are in the best place to predict how long someone may have to live. This as you say is often based on similar previous patients with the same type and stage of cancer but cannot account for individual differences between people.

From what you have said you have asked the doctor and they have given a vague time frame. This really may be  because they really don't know. This must be tough on you and I understand how you would like to have something more concrete so you can plan and prepare for what is to happen but this sadly this isn't always possible.

You have been doing your own searching online about this and what you say is correct that often high grade gliomas will have an average prognosis of a year but it can vary greatly between patients and some will live longer than this and others much less.

The steroids seem to have given your husband a boost for now and the nurses are regularly checking in on him to make sure he is ok and isn't experiencing any more symptoms. They will continue to do this but remember with your husband's permission you can also talk to them about any concerns you have and what to expect.

Please get back in touch if you have more questions. You are also welcome to call our helpline on 0808 800 4040, Mon-Fri 9-5 to speak to a nurse.

    All the best

    Naomi
