I am so sorry to hear what you and your family are going through, It is heartbreaking to see a loved one in that way.

When someone is as poorly as you mum it can be difficult for the doctors to perform all the tests they would ideally like to.  Sometimes, treatments might cause more harm rather than benefit and so decisions about treatment have to be considered carefully. From what you have said your mum has advanced lung cancer.  There is information about advanced lung cancer on the link below which you might find helpful.

When the doctors feel they are unable to cure a patient of their cancer this may be termed palliative care, and the focus becomes more on keeping the person comfortable and less focus on hospitals and examinations. The palliative care team who your mum was referred to, and you said visited, are now the specialist team who will care for you and your mum.  They are the experts in symptom control and emotional support for her and her loved ones. Often they can help people to be cared for at home rather than in hospital if someone wants to remain at home.  I've provided a link here with more information about them

You have also asked about what might happen if your mum deteriorates.  As your mum becomes more poorly she will sleep more, eat less, become weaker and her care will move on to end of life care. I have provided some information here for you to read which may be upsetting but may answer some of the questions you may have.

It is important you also have support in caring for your mum, and that you look after yourself too. Here is some information on being a care giver.

Hello Jenleigh85 and thanks for getting back to us,  

In advanced cancers, unexplained bruising (which is bleeding from blood vessels under the skin) can occur because the cancer is interfering with things in the blood that usually keep it in balance.  I can't explain exactly why this is happening with your mom as there can be a few different reasons, but do talk to the palliative care team about it. Also do let them know about the hot flushes and see what they suggest to help to try and control them so they are less of a bother.

The palliative care team will want to be kept up to date with things like this and keep your mom as comfortable as possible so don't hesitate to get in touch with them.
