Possible BCC

I would like some advice please. I had an inconclusive biopsy on tip of nose. I have been offered MOHS and an opportunity to discuss laser treatment. My fear is being disfigured if I do not actually have BCC. I do not know what to say or do and I am very frightened

  • Hello Petula,

It sounds as though you're facing a lot of uncertainty at the moment. Waiting for answers is difficult enough, but having an inconclusive biopsy and the possibility of surgery on your nose can understandably feel frightening, especially when you're worried about how you might look afterwards.

Mohs surgery is a very specialised type of surgery that aims to remove all of the abnormal tissue while preserving as much healthy skin as possible. During the procedure, each layer of tissue removed is examined carefully, which helps the surgeon remove only what is needed.

If you feel able to, it may be worth speaking with your specialist again about your concerns. It's completely reasonable to ask questions about what the surgery might involve and the likely cosmetic outcome. Some questions that may help are:

    • Are there any alternative treatment options?
    • What are the benefits and risks of having, or not having, the surgery?
    • What can I realistically expect the appearance of my nose to be afterwards?
    • Would I have any follow-up or monitoring if I decide not to have surgery?

If you're still feeling unsure, you could also ask about getting a second opinion, which your GP or specialist can usually help arrange.

I hope this helps a little. If you'd like to talk things through in more detail, you're very welcome to give one of our nurses a call on the freephone helpline on 0808 800 4040. We're here Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
