Pain in the area of ADH

I was diagnosed with atypical ductal hyperplasia after finding a dense lump in my breast. I am 44 and after vacuum assisted biopsy diagnosis was inconclusive with suspected DCIS. I had vacuum assisted excision done to investigate further, the results came back as ADH, the lump is 3,5 cm approximately. I am experiencing a variety of strange sensations in the lump: irregular intermittent (daily) pain, some burning, throbbing and prickly sensations. I wanted to ask if this is normal with my diagnosis? My consultant thinks the pain is related to possible hormonal changes. But it feels like it is to do with processes that are happening in the lump. I would appreciate any opinion and advice. Thank you!

  • Hello and thanks for posting

The symptoms you're describing can be normal with ADH, especially after having a vacuum biopsy and vacuum-assisted excision.

Burning, prickling, throbbing, shooting pains and tenderness are often caused by healing tissue, inflammation, scar tissue, or nerves recovering after the procedure.

However, it would be a good idea to contact your breast team if you feel the lump is getting bigger, the pain is  worsening, or you develop skin changes, nipple changes, redness, or discharge.

Your consultant may also be right that hormonal changes are contributing, particularly at your age when hormone levels can start to fluctuate. The sensations seem more likely to be related to healing and/or hormonal breast changes than anything else.

If the symptoms are still making you feel worried, again, it’s probably best to speak to your breast team. If you have access to a breast care nurse perhaps, they can provide you with further information. You often have to call and leave them a message, and they will get back to you.

I hope this helps. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
