Myeloma

Hi, new on here would appreciate some advice. Diagnosed with myeloma in March this year, just completed the first 4 months of treatment, due to have a stem cell transplant in November. Been told that due to the melphalan I will lose my hair which I am devastated about as I hadn’t realised it would be so drastic.
Has anyone used the cold cap system in particular the penguin cold cap and what were the results like thank you

  • Hi Flowe,

When I had a stem cell transplant in 2013 , I was informed I couldn’t use a cold cap. I was told they were not used for blood cancer, as the idea was to target as much blood as possible. This obviously included the blood circulating in my head.

I don’t know if anything has changed since then and if they are now used. Myeloma UK would probably be able to give you more insight.

  • Hi There and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis and upcoming stem cell transplant. I appreciate how losing your hair must be a very upsetting thing for you to go through and hope you are given the support you need at this time.

Unfortunately cold caps are only used for solid type tumours and aren't usually recommended for haematological type cancers. Do double check this with your team to make sure but I can understand how disappointing this may be for you.

There is more information about hair loss and cancer treatment on the website. As difficult as it may be do remember that hair loss is temporary and your hair will grow back after treatment. Today there are many different options of good hair coverings, wigs and so on to help with your appearance through your treatment.

You may find it useful to also reach out to the cancer hair care charity who can also give you advice and support in regards to hair loss and management.

Hopefully you will also get some replies from other people who have gone through similar on this forum but you may also look at the support groups locally to you on Myeloma UK as well.

I hope this helps but do get back in touch if you have more questions or feel free to give the nurses a call on 0808 800 4040 weekdays 9-5 if you prefer.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
