Asbestos anxiety

Hello

I was helping a family member remove some eaves with a hammer from there house. After removing them all, doing so realised they may have been asbestos I wore a Covid face covering stile mask. It was a couple of hours spread over two evenings all out door work.

It was a gold ball dimple texture with ruff edges with hair fibres sticking out. I have thrown all the clothing away. I am worrying like crazy about my health I just can’t stop. I booked my self in for CBT but can’t stop googling and fixating on it

  • I'm sorry your currently experiencing such anxiety regarding it , has the part been covered and left alone now with no one in the space or going past it ? A  UKAS-accredited asbestos testing laboratory needs to be contacted to test to see if it definitely contains asbestos or not. If it does then it needs to be professionally cleared away.

You personally should be fine as any illness typically comes after being exposed to it daily for a number of years.

  • Hello and thank you for getting in touch,

I'm sorry to hear how much this is worrying you. It sounds like it's having a real impact on your day-to-day life.

From what you've described, any possible exposure would have been very brief. People who are most at risk of asbestos-related illnesses are usually those who have had regular exposure over many years. Short-term exposure is likely to involve only a small number of fibres and is very unlikely to cause long-term health problems.

It's good to hear you've arranged CBT. Anxiety can make us search for certainty, but unfortunately searching the internet can't tell you what your individual risk is and often ends up increasing worry rather than easing it. Hopefully CBT will help you find ways to manage these thoughts and stop them taking over.

Be kind to yourself, and lean on friends and family if you can. You're always welcome to post again.

    Take care

    Jemma
