Failed smear test

I went for my smear test today which I was dreading. The nurse was really lovely but she was unable to find my cervix.

she tried a longer speculum but still was unable to complete the procedure. I’m re booked in with another nurse next week but feeling really anxious and stressed. This has never happened before and I’m worried the next appointment will be just as stressful.
has anyone had experience of this? Could it just be that she was not as experienced

  • Hello and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to hear that your cervical screening (smear test) was unsuccessful and that the experience has left you feeling uncomfortable and upset. I can understand why this may have been frustrating, particularly if you were feeling anxious about the appointment.

Sometimes it can be difficult for a healthcare professional to see the cervix during a cervical screening. This can happen for several reasons, including the position of the cervix, a tilted womb (uterus), vaginal walls that make it harder to see the cervix, or muscle tension if you are feeling anxious or uncomfortable. Difficulty locating the cervix is not uncommon and does not necessarily indicate that anything is wrong.

Several adjustments can sometimes help, such as changing position on the examination couch, placing cushions under the hips to tilt the pelvis, using a different size speculum, or taking extra time to help you feel as relaxed as possible.

I appreciate that returning for another appointment may feel daunting, especially after your first experience. It may help to let the practice know beforehand what happened so that they can discuss any adjustments that might make the procedure more comfortable for you.

The Eve Appeal has information about cervical screening and the different adjustments you can request, which you may find helpful.

I hope your next appointment goes more smoothly. Please do get back in touch if you have any further questions or concerns. You can also speak with one of our nurses on our free Nurse Helpline, available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, on 0808 800 4040
