Confused.com - not sure when to take my anti sickness drug

I’m starting radiotherapy and chemo tablets on Monday 6th July. I’ve been given anti sickness tablets Domperidone and Loperamide if I get the trots. The nurse originally told me to take the anti sickness drug before the chemo drug, and then she changed it to only if I feel sick. What is normal to do?

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I can appreciate its tricky to make sense of mixed information.

Advice is usually based on the the specific "emetogenicity" (sickness-inducing potential) of your exact chemo tablets and radiotherapy site. There are different chemotherapy drugs, and they differ a bit in terms of their side effects.

For treatments with a moderate-to-high risk of causing sickness, patients are told to take anti-sickness tablets regularly 30 to 60 minutes before their chemo tablets to block the nausea before it can trigger. For oral chemotherapy treatments with a minimal or very low risk of sickness, routine prevention is often not recommended. In these cases, the hospital provides the tablets "just in case" so you have them on hand to take only if you begin to feel unwell. Your prescription should have instructions on the box. It may say take as needed for example.

Domperidone stops nausea by speeding up stomach emptying and blocking sickness signals in the brain. It works best if taken before meals or before your chemo. It is typically used for a short duration at a time, as in the first few days after taking the chemotherapy drugs.

Do see how you are, and ask your hospital team for advice if you need to.

    I hope that this helps,

    Best wishes,

    Vanda
