Zolendric acid vs Denosumab

Hi could you tell me what the difference is between the two and how do the oncologist choose which one is right for you?

  • Hello and thanks for posting

As you probably know both zoledronic acid and denosumab are treatments that help protect the bones. They’re often prescribed when bones are at risk of becoming weak or breaking.

Zoledronic acid is given as an infusion (drip ). It can affect the kidneys but kidney function would be monitored via a blood test. It may also cause flu like symptoms.

Denosumab is given as an injection under the skin. It’s safer if kidney function is low.

Doctors choose which drug to give by looking the kidney function (very important),your overall health, side effects of each drug, and what may be easier for you to manage such as drip vs injection.

I hope this helps. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
