Struggling to access help

My 79 yo dad was referred by GP on a 10 day pathway on 15th May.  He had a phone consultation and a abdominal pelvic and lung ct booked along with a colonscopy.

Ct done 26th May

Phone call 7pm Friday 29th May " you have a PE (pulmonary embolism) and you need to give self blood thinners !! Dad mentioned having colonoscopy on 1st June so told start thinners after procedure.

Saturday 30th May dad deteriorated fast so I took A&E at xxx Infirmary and he was blue lit to Acute Cardiac Care.  Heart attack as PE migrated into heart.

We.were in hospital till 4th June where the cardiac team stated Ct showed metastic pancreatic cancer as well as a damaged heart but stated Cancer care is a Wigan issue not cardiac issue.

Discharged home

He is now in my home as a 79 widower who can barely walk is not eating or drinking and we have no support, no named consultant or oncologist

I took discharge papers to his GP on 5th June and now we are in no man's land.

Dad is failing fast and I don't know what to do.

  • Hi there Angela_J and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your dad, this must be such a difficult time with so much happening the past couple of weeks.

Do try and get in touch with your dad's GP surgery again so you can talk through your dads current situation and any concerns with his doctor.

The doctor may wish to assess your dad in person and refer him onto other community health services such as Macmillan nurses who can also check in on your dad and assess any needs he has at this time. We have a section of information on the website about support at home for you and your family that may be also helpful to read. You can also search up local cancer support in your area by postcode on the cancer care map. The hospital your dad is under may also have a cancer support centre that may be called a Macmillan cancer support or Maggie centre, so do find out what is nearby.

Hopefully your dad will also hear something from the hospital too including a named consultant and specialist nurse who can guide you both through what his diagnosis means and the next steps.

Times like this can be overwhelming but if your dad is deteriorating the doctor needs to be made aware so he can be best cared for in the right place.

I hope this is helpful but do get back in touch if you have more questions or if you wish to talk it through give us a call on 0808 800 4040, we're here week days 9-5.

    Take care

    Naomi
