Basal cell carcinoma on eyelid

  • Hi, I have a diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma and am awaiting excision and reconstruction of my eyelid. I am nervous about how I will look afterwards as the way I look is key to my profession and also about eyelid function. I'd love to speak to someone to find out more if possible and thank you.
  • Call the helpline on 0808 800 4040. A nurse can answer and offer advice. Good luck too.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

It is really only your surgeon who can tell you what your eyelid will look like after your surgery. They will rebuild your eyelid carefully and aim for normal function and a natural look. There will be a scar, but it usually fades over time. Most people end up with good eyelid function and appearance.

You have posted on the ask the nurses section of the forum but you might be asking for other users experience. Anyone is welcome to reply on here but you may get more response from others who may be or have gone through similar by posting in a different section of the forum as well as here.

I hope this is of some help. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Thank you Celene. Not heard very clear information so far and will try helpline

  • Hi Rosalie just wondering have you progressed any further with yr BCC diagnosis??? I had my BCC ower eyelid and partial tearduct removed  6 weeks ago....The operation was ok but the aftrr care was not good. I was given very scant info about after care and had to Google to get some info......I had my stitches removed 2 weeks after...and won't see my Consultatnt until 27th July for review and pathology report.... Its just a waiting game....All I can tell you is to expect a black eye..  bruiing and swelling  for 3 weeks....Not too much pain..I used Paracetemol....But because he took partial tearduct away zi have been left with a watery eye which is a niuiance  and numbness round my eye and cheek.  As someone who loved wearing eyemakeup I am finding that very difficult to not be able to use eyemakeup.  I am assuming I will be able to do thst in the future.  Who knows....Anyway that is my story.  I hope I havent alarmed you but it really just takes time to heal the wound and skin graft....and of course PATIENCE....Take care and please  let me know how you are getting on....

  • Thank you so much - still waiting for an operation date. It's really helpful to have your info and I do hope you can wear make up again soon!

  • Update today.  After 6 weeks my eye is beginning to look back to normal...Still quite sensitive so won't be putting eyemakeup on just yet...Will wait a couple of weeks...Once I see my Consultant on 27th July and get the pathology report to say whether all the cancer has been removed I think I will relax.... Its been a long journey from 26th May but I just took each day quietly  and can't believe I've got to this stage...So try not to worry it does get better.  Just give it 2 months out of action....I suppose in the grand scheme of things thats not long!!!!

  • Just to add, I hope you get a good Consultant who will explain after care to you in detail....Mine didn't and when I asked questions I got very quck  short replies...Was not helpful at all.  I had to Google to get answers but most said speak to yr Consultant.  That wasn't going to happen....He didn't want to explain after care in detail....So I found that a bit traumatic....In the end I phoned the Eye Casualty Dept and got a very nice Sister there who was very helpful and answered my queries...I will always be grateful to her for her kindness...
