I'm being moved onto Hydroxycarbamide - is anyone else on this?

Hi,

I have been on monthly venesection for my PV & yesterday had my 6 monthly call with my haematologist.

She has told me she would like me to move onto hydroxycarbamide. Then stop the venesections.

Is anyone else on this? Any issues or is it all good. As always I'm a bit worried.

  • Hello Pete and thanks for posting

Hydroxycarbamide is a very common treatment for Polycythaemia vera (PV). It’s often used when venesections are needed often or no longer ideal.

The aim is to control your blood counts and reduce or stop venesections. Many people take it for years and do well on it. It’s usually started at a low dose and adjusted slowly.

We do have some information on our website about hydroxycarbamide and potential side effects which you may find interesting to read.

You have posted on the ask the nurses section of the forum but I see you are asking for other user's experiences. Anyone is welcome to reply on here but you may get more responses from others who may be or have gone through similar by posting in a different section of the forum as well as here.

I hope this is of some help. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,
