Thickened endometrium and polyp

An ultrasound has shown that I have a thickened endometrium and polyp. My gp has referred me to gynae, but is saying it’s not an urgent appt as the thickened endometrium will be because of adenomyosis. The symptoms I am having seem to be both the same for endometrial cancer and adenomyosis, except I don’t have painful periods. I am concerned as I am not sure how they have diagnosed this without a biopsy, and that it could be more sinister. I don’t know if I should be pushing for an urgent referral or if it’s ok to wait?

  • To add- I have read the scan report on the NHS app and it doesn’t refer to benign or otherwise

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about what's been happening and can appreciate that things like this can prey on your mind.

A thickened womb lining and polyp are common and are usually caused by benign conditions like hormonal changes, adenomyosis, or the polyp itself. An ultrasound scan cannot diagnose cancer, but it can suggest whether something looks more typical of a benign cause. A biopsy is the only way to rule out cancer completely, but it isn't always urgent especially if you are premenopausal as the womb lining naturally thickens during the menstrual cycle.

Endometrial cancer is much less common than benign causes particularly if you are not post menopausal . Doctors thinks it's usually safe to wait for a routine gynaecology appointment unless you have post menopausal bleeding, worsening heavy bleeding, are in severe pain or feel unwell.

Probably, the best thing to do is to discuss this further with your GP. Do mention that you are worried about endometrial cancer. Hopefully, they can clarify why you don't need an urgent appointment.

I hope this is of some help. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,
