Barrett’s Oesophagus. Worsening symptoms and changes in cells

I was diagnosed before Christmas with Barrett’s oesophagus and was put on Pantoprazole. I had never had any acid sensation so this was a surprise though I know understand there are a number of symptoms which I did have!

I’ve just had a letter saying that the biopsies show changes to cells which warrant further attention. My symptoms have increased since Christmas and the last week or so I’ve been struggling to swallow and I can taste the acid all the time despite the medication.  I’ve started to take gaviscon at bedtime now too. I’m very concerned and am booked in to see my GP first thing Monday morning but I don’t know how long it will take for the referral to the upper GI specialist team.

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about you having barrett's oesophagus, the symptoms you now have and that you need some more tests to find out more.

There is information about what is barretts? on our website and Guts UK also have some good information.

I hope your appointment with your GP goes well today and you get some peace of mind at this time.

I assume you will be reviewed quite quickly by the GI team to decide what further tests or treatment you need to have carried out. Having abnormal cells detected doesn't usually mean cancer, however these need to be investigated further just to be on the safe side. When barretts is diagnosed any abnormal cells will need to be either monitored or removed to prevent them turning into cancer over time.

The hospital team when you see them will be able to explain what this means and what needs to happen next. Do remember surveillance and treatment for barretts is a positive thing to pick up abnormalities at an early stage and to prevent anything more serious developing.

I hope this helps and you get some peace of mind soon.

Do get back in touch if you would like or if you prefer give us a call on 0808 800 4040, we're here weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
