Do I have treatment or not

Hello

so I will try and keep this as simple as people

my kidney has been removed with a 9/10 cm tumour biopsy has come back I’m pt3a with clear margins I've been offered chemo and immunotherapy

but they said if I have that treatment now and I get cancer again in the same place I won’t be able to have the full treatment again

but if cancer comes in a different place I will be able to get the full treatment

so do I have treatment now or wait and see if it returns I’m so confused I’m thinking what if it in some tissue you haven’t removed

and if I have treatment now then I hopefully kill it before it gets worse

really don’t know what to do any advise please

  • HI deedee

Take the option of further treatment to kill off any remaining cancer cells now. You can deal with any possible future problems if and when they arise. From my own experience with cancer take no chances treat it early with everything you are offered.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation. What a difficult choice to make. It is hard for us to give an opinion as we are not involved in your care. It does sound like you need more discussions with your team. If you haven't met the oncologist yet it would be good to talk this through with them. It would be good to know if you didn't have the treatment straight away what monitoring you would have to pick up if the cancer came back.

A lot will also depend on your general health and how well you would cope with treatment. Every patient is treated very individually.

You may find it helpful to get a second opinion from another renal team to see if they came to the same conclusion.

We have some information on our website about deciding what treatment you need for kidney cancer. In some cases immunotherapy is given on its own rather then having chemotherapy as well. I am not sure if this is an option but do explore the different options with your doctors.

You may also have been given a specialist nurse so it may be helpful to talk this through with them.

Your GP may also be a useful person to discuss this with as they will have been kept up to date with any treatment that you have received from the hospital.

I don't think that there is a wrong decision to make as it is whatever you feel comfortable with.

You are very welcome to ring and discuss any of this with one of the helpline nurses.

The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
