Ovarian Cancer

**this is a post on behalf of my grandmother**

Hi,

My grandmother was recently diagnosed with ovarian cancer and has undergone key-hole surgery and subsequent chemotherapy. After the course of her treatment was complete, her scan showed no signs of anything being left behind.

However, we have now been advised that during her chemotherapy the cancer came back and is now situated in her vagina.

Her doctors have said that they are unwilling to operate on her for a second time and have suggested an IV of sort to help shrink/contain the tumor.

My point for posting this is to find out if the above is correct; are you not able to operate on a patient for the second time, if the cancer comes back?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am very sorry to hear about your grandmother, it must be very upsetting to hear the cancer has spread.

Every patient is different and what is and isn't possible in terms of treatment will vary. It is only the team looking after your grandmother who can say what the best way forward is for your grandmother.

Unfortunately if and when a cancer spreads and is found away from the tumour site it can be difficult to know if there are cancer cells in other parts of the body too. In this instance a systemic treatment ( such as chemotherapy or a targeted treatment) that travels around the blood stream to hopefully capture any lurking cancer cell to kill or slow down the cancer is better.

I hope this helps but do make sure the family asks the doctors involved any questions to understand the situation better.

I wish you and your grandmother all the best.

Do get back in touch if you have further questions or if you prefer give us a call on 0808 800 4040 weekdays 9-5 if you prefer.
