Sternoclavicular joint lump

I discovered a lump on my sternoclavicular joint a month or so ago. - c 14th November.  I was sent for an x-ray where the doctor said the result was normal - i.e. no dislocation(?). An ultrasound was then requested. I am still waiting for an ultrasound appointment. I thought lumps were a red signal and ought to get diagnosed quickly. I have an e-consult with my doctor to discuss this and recurring anaemia on 24th - i.e. in 9 days time. In the meantime I find this worrying. I also have sore glands in my neck on the left side. I am 69. How can I speed up diagnosis? And is there anything I can do whilst I wait and worry?

  • Hello reidaa159 and thank you for your post.

It’s normal to feel worried about a lump. Most lumps are harmless, but it’s good you’re getting it checked.

I can appreciate that waiting to be told when your ultrasound scan appointment will be can be worrying. You could ring the ultrasound scan department at your hospital to see if they have received the request for your scan; and they may be able to give you some timeframe.

If you are unhappy with the waiting time for a scan you can always contact the hospital's Patient Advisory Liaison Service (PALS) to voice your concerns.

At your e‑consult, explain the lump, sore glands, and anaemia together to your doctor.  Ask if the ultrasound can be fast‑tracked.

Most lumps are not cancer, so try not to panic.

People often experience a whole range of emotions when waiting for scans and results. You may find it helpful to look at this NHS charity called Every Mind Matters It can help to get tips on how to manage anxiety.

Anxiety UK has a good website with helpful tips on how to deal with these situations.

I hope you know more soon and everything is ok.
