Anxiety about returning Cancer

I’ve had two lots of treatment for two different areas of Cancer in the last 18 months and I’m worried it’s not completely gone?

I was diagnosed with tongue and neck Cancer and went through Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy for those areas. Then after scans it was discovered that I had Anul Rectal and Pelvis Cancer and had to endure the repeat treatment of Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy for a second time.It was a challenging time from start to finish and I’m still in recovery as it’s only 4months since I completed my treatment.

Ive been told that I’ve responded extremely well to treatment and that I’m all good, but I don’t think I am.My Oncilogist is repeating Scans in December as there is something that they are hoping it to be scar tissue, but I’m very very concerned that it’s still Can er as it’s very prominent.

My anxiety and nerves are getting to me.I feel so alone in this journey and have done since day one. What should I do?

  • Hello Mummybearx4, and thank you for posting,

It sounds like you’ve been through an incredibly challenging 18 months, and, understandably, you feel anxious about what comes next. Many people find that once treatment ends and hospital visits become less frequent, the reality of everything they’ve been through really starts to sink in. That can feel overwhelming.

I’m sorry to hear you’re feeling alone with this; it must be very hard.

It’s encouraging that your doctors are pleased with how well you’ve responded to treatment. It’s quite common to have a follow-up scan a few months after radiotherapy because the effects of treatment can continue for several weeks. Scans done too soon can look unclear, so the next one should give a more accurate picture.

In the meantime, try to focus on what you can control – like getting emotional support. Maggie's Centre offers both online and face-to-face support for people affected by cancer, and you can also find local resources through Cancer Care Map.

If you’d like to talk things through, our nurses are here for you. You can call us free on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm.
