How serious is basal cell carcinoma

Hi I’ve been referred to a dermatologist as doctor suspects I have bcc. Have googled this as you do and although says it’s not serious I am very confused as it says it’s skin cancer. Also I’m wondering how long I will wait to see dermatologist as I believe there is a shortage of these in uk. Many thanks

  • Hi Fran

BCC skin cancer is very slow growing and surgery to remove a lesion is usually the end of it. However you are likely to have other areas of sun damaged skin and it is really important that you protect your skin if you dont want more BCCs. Hats suncream clothing avoiding sun especially if UV index is 3 or more. Our local NHS waiting time at dermatology is 9 months. Private hospitals also have long waits.

  • Hi ed

thank you for taking time to reply. You gave me more information than my gp did so thanks a lot . My problem is nothing compared to others on this chat forum and I send my love and best wishes to everyone who is suffering. Xx

  • Hello and thanks for your enquiry,

    I can appreciate your concern.

basal cell skin cancer called (BCC) are the most common type of skin cancer that are slow growing and don't tend to spread. Therefore they are not considered urgent to treat, unlike melanoma skin cancer. There are different types of treatment to treat BCC. As I am sure you are aware the NHS is under a lot of pressures at the moment which means many patients are waiting longer to have tests, have treatment, and to see a specialist . I appreciate waiting any length of time to be treated is very stressful. But treatment to remove a BCC isn't regarded as urgent. So waiting a few months is unlikely to do any harm in the long term.

There is always the option of going private. In most hospitals now there is a Private Patient's Officer who may be able to advise on this further. The the private health website has information about private hospitals in the UK. If you look for a dermatologist (skin specialist doctor) in the "Specialising in" box along with your postcode, in another box, it will come up with a list.

I hope this helps. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Vanda
