How serious is basal cell carcinoma

Hi I’ve been referred to a dermatologist as doctor suspects I have bcc. Have googled this as you do and although says it’s not serious I am very confused as it says it’s skin cancer. Also I’m wondering how long I will wait to see dermatologist as I believe there is a shortage of these in uk. Many thanks

  • Hi Fran

BCC skin cancer is very slow growing and surgery to remove a lesion is usually the end of it. However you are likely to have other areas of sun damaged skin and it is really important that you protect your skin if you dont want more BCCs. Hats suncream clothing avoiding sun especially if UV index is 3 or more. Our local NHS waiting time at dermatology is 9 months. Private hospitals also have long waits.
