Moveable diagnostic - treatment has changed from internal radiotherapy to external radiotherapy. Is this a normal part of the process?

When I was first diagnosed, ovarian cancer stage 1b grade 2, was informed complete hysterectomy would hopefully be a treatment. After operation I was informed, would need internal radiotherapy. Went to appointment and thought planning appointment, to learn it’s now be decided, although assured cancer free, so any treatment would be adjunct, that I need external radiotherapy over five and half weeks daily. I have checked what’s changed and they said I should not have been told latter, although all sites state this as treatment for my stage. I’ve lost trust in medical professionals as unsure what happens next, if they don’t know, is this normal part of process, as I fear goalposts keep changing.

  • Hello Sam1991, and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn that you have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. This must not be easy,

I was unsure of your exact situation; I can appreciate that it is unsettling when your treatment plan changes unexpectedly. However, radiotherapy is not commonly used to treat ovarian cancer, especially if it is an early-stage cancer; the main treatments are usually surgery and chemotherapy, depending on the stage of the cancer (its size and how far it has spread).

It would be best to discuss this with your cancer team, who know your situation. It might be helpful to speak to your specialist nurse (CNS) if you have one, and ask them to clarify your situation, why the treatment decisions that were made were made and what happens next.

It’s reassuring to hear you’ve been told you're cancer-free, and any further treatment is considered adjunct (an add-on treatment ), meaning it's aimed at reducing the risk of the cancer coming back.

However, it is important that you have clear, consistent communication and feel confident in your care. For some people, it can be helpful to get a second opinion, which can help clarify a situation.

I hope this helps in some way. Please feel free to get back to us. If you would like to speak with one of the nurses on the helpline, you can give us a call on 0808 800 4040 between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.
