Vulval cancer in the elderly

I care for my mum who 92 and has vulval cancer . She doesn’t want any invasive treatment , just management . At the moment she’s taking a baseline amount of painkillers - just paracetamol. She’s keen to still “live” and stay alert whilst she can. She’s up and down around 4 times in the night redressing her cancer as it’s so sore and uncomfortable. Is there anything topical she can use or any advice to help her get through the night ?

I feel we’ve just been left as she doesn’t want treatment. No one checks on her

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your mum, it sounds like she is very uncomfortable and it is important she gets some support locally to deal with this.

Whilst we have some general information about living with vulvar cancer on the website including care for the vulvar area. , it would be best if your mum could be assessed properly so that the most appropriate creams and dressings can be given.

Good skincare is essential to the vulvar area by keeping the area clean and moisturised and by not using and irritating or perfumed products, the British Association of Dermatologists have a page about vulvar skincare on their website.

I assume your mum has been referred back to the care of the GP however they can also refer her to palliative care in the community who are also symptom management specialists who can give advice and support. They often are made up of specialist doctors and nurses ( sometimes called Macmillan nurses) and can visit patients at home if necessary.

Practice nurses alongside district nurses in the community may also be involved in patients dressings and management of any broken and fragile skin or open wounds. As and when needed a tissue viability nurse may be involved.

At first palliative care may only involve a light touch approach however contact can be increased depending on the changing needs of each patients condition and situation.

There are also gynaecological cancer specific charities such as the eve appeal that also have information and support available.

I am sorry we can't give you direct advice but hope this helps in some way. Do however feel free to get back anytime and if you prefer to speak with one of the nurses over the phone our number is 0808 800 4040 and we're here weekdays 9-5.

    Take care

    Naomi
