Breast cancer - I'm only having my surgery now despite being diagnosed in June. Is this normal?

I had a mammaogram result in June, a biopsy at the end of July  and I’m only just going for surgery next week. It seems a long wait when a friend of mine is getting bowel cancer treatment within a month

  • Hi Marmaladejane,

A very warm welcome to the forum.

I am sorry to hear that you have had such a long wait for surgery in comparison to your friend's time scale. Some types of cancers are more aggressive than others and need to be treated as a priority. There are also different stages and grades of breast cancer. Do you know what stage and type of breast cancer you have? This may be why you haven't been rushed through for surgery. I do hope that all goes well for you next week. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Marmaladejane and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to learn that your mammogram showed signs of  breast cancer. This must be a worrying time for you.

NHS England has introduced a new target called the Faster Diagnosis Service (FDS).

One of the targets is that there should be no longer than 2 months (62 days) wait between the date the hospital receives an urgent suspected cancer referral and the start of treatment.

If you are concerned about waiting too long for information or to start treatment, you can reach out to your hospital specialist through their secretary.

If you haven’t already done so, consider contacting the hospital’s Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) to voice your concerns.

If the hospital has a Macmillan Information Centre, or a Maggies Centre you may also find additional information there.

I appreciate that waiting is difficult so I hope you know more soon and your operation goes smoothly.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5 pm Monday to Friday.

     Kind regards

    Tina
