  • Hi Darren just to ease your mind a little considering fit tests can go into the high hundreds so I wouldn't say your score is very high actually , the good thing is you are getting checked by having a Colonoscopy ,this is to rule out anything nasty rather than rule it in ,trust me you will feel so much better after you know what is causing the bleeding ,it could be something really simple and easy to deal which is the most likely outcome ,I've had 2 Colonoscopies and the worst part for me was taking the drink (Bowel Prep) its really awful but the Colonoscopy itself was fine ,I had sedation which you will be offered ,at the end they will tell you if they have found anything nasty so you should know straight away without wondering for weeks ,I know this was for the nurses but they are not back until Monday so I hope you don't mind me answering ,I hope all goes smoothly for you ,let us know how you get on ....

  • Hello jenny and thankyou for taking the time to reply i very much appreciate it,and it does offer me some reasuurance so thankyou very much i think i need to stay of google i live alone now with my older children and just seem to get the horror stories of google,i be glad to find out what is going on its the waitng that is so hard as i sure you know if you have had to have 2 hope your well

  • Hi I forgot to say mine was all good ,I have Diverticulitis which was possibly what was causing the blood also had internal piles and a polyp ,my score was 56 ,but I've been on here for a couple of years now and I've seen very high scores that turned out to be fine and low scores that turned out not so good ,its a good idea to stay off google because its really outdated and not very accurate so you definitely cannot go by that ,I know we've all done it but lessons learned .

  • Thankyou jenny u have helped ease my worry a little and will be staying of google once i get the camera thing id like to post on here if thats ok

  • That's absolutely fine ,this is a great site with lots of help and advice so if you need to ask any questions just bring them there's always someone here to help you .

  • Hi Darren, I'm not a nurse and no expert but as they are often not available at the weekend and I did have a colonoscopy, I am just replying for what it's worth. From what I've read online, about 10% of people with blood in stool have cancer. How high it is only says how much blood is in your stool. It doesn't really indicate what is causing it. Yeah, some things like diverticulities and cancer would tend to cause more bleeding than something like hemorrhoids or a fissure, but the number isn't going to suggest any one particular cause.

I didn't find the camera test hurt at all. People have different experiences but I felt nothing. The only thing that did hurt was the amount of wiping I had to do the previous day due to the bowel prep. I really recommend having sudocream to hand.

  • Hi Darren, and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to learn that you are waiting to have a camera test, which looks at your bowel (colonoscopy). This must not be easy.

Waiting for tests can be stressful and cause anxiety, and many people feel they do not have any control over what is happening to them.

It is important to know that having a high FIT result does not mean it is more likely to be caused by cancer. All people who have a FIT test result of 10 or above will be referred to the hospital to have a colonoscopy. This is so that doctors can examine the large bowel closely and take some samples (biopsy), and although they will be looking for cancer, they will be looking for other bowel conditions such as inflammation or polyps. As Margaret Mary has said, most people who have a colonoscopy will not have cancer.

Many people worry that the colonoscopy will hurt. Everyone's experience will be different; some people have no problems, but for others, there can be some discomfort. You will be offered sedation to help with this.

I hope this helps in some way. If you would like to speak with one of our nurses on the helpline, you are welcome to give us a call. We are available between 9am and 5 pm Monday to Friday freephone 0808 800 4040.

You can also call the MIND helpline for support with any anxiety you may be having.
