KRAS mutation found what does that mean ?

Hi

I could really do with some clarity please.

a new test result has appeared from one of the many ! However I had a right lower lobectomy on the 27th of August and some lymph nodes removed.

i am concerned that this now may mean I might need further treatment?

this test has come from a lung biopsy which was done back in July - I am still waiting for lymph nodes removed results .

could someone please explain it for me ?

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your recent diagnosis and hope you are recovering well from your surgery.

KRAS is a gene that helps control how cells grow and divide. When the KRAS gene becomes mutated ( changed),it can cause cells to grow in an uncontrolled way.

Having a KRAS mutation doesn't definitely mean you will need more treatment. Whether you do, will depend on the stage (extent) of your lung cancer.

There are targeted and immunotherapy treatments for certain KRAS mutations, but these are mostly used if the cancer comes back or spreads, rather than straight after surgery. So the KRAS result is helpful information for your doctors in case you ever need treatment in the future.

The best thing to do is to to discuss your results with your specialist team as they are familiar with all your medical details and are better placed to advise you further.

I hope this helps. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,
