Worried I have cancer

I've had a lot of tests including gynecologist visit, ultrasound,  endo and colonoscopy, blood tests, mammogram, and have since being diagnosed with Gilbert's Syndrome, prolaps, IBS, lactose intolerance recently fibromyalgia. My bloods have the usual issues with high bilirubin since 2012, recently it's been in the margins. The mammogram only came back saying I had fibrous dense breasts, and to do regular self checks not been asked to come back, so good sign right. Since 2023 I've been suffering with back pain and sciatica, worst in my left, but recently my lower back pain has got worse and worse, can't sit, stand or walk for long, pain is always there but as I say getting worse. I've paid for my own lower back MRI, which is o. 2nd September,  so hope to get answers. I have fallen down the stairs about 5 times since 2019, but never went to the hospital, only when I had a bicycle accident, had x-rays of my knee, hope and jaw, nothing untoward was found. I still have the pain I my lower back and left hip, right knee, right foot and down my leg. My bones ache when I wake up and through the day.

Could any of this be breast cancer, my fibro, lung or spinal cancer.

I hate feeling like this, is it in my head, or do you think I'm justified feeling this way. Could it be cancer or metastasis, it's just strange that so far nothing has been picked up.

  • It seems you are quite anxious and that's understandable. It's only a couple of days now until your scan so, if you can, try to keep your mind busy - reading, sewing, going for a walk?

If your scan comes back negative, will you feel reassured? If not, you might want to think about counselling. It's a shame to waste your life worrying. I'm 5 years into a cancer journey but try every day to be positive as worry won't change anything - only diminish my enjoyment of life.

    I wish you well.

Thank you so much Helen, I appreciate you responding to my post.

I know you are right, and I'll do as much as I can to stay positive.

I will be having councilling shortly, so I'll definitely discuss my health anxieties with them. As you say life is too short to be so anxious about the things we cannot control.

I wish you all the luck with your journey and you're doing a great job staying positive.

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about the different symptoms you have alongside some diagnosis of other conditions. This must be a difficult time for you.

Unfortunately no one here can diagnose you or say if any of these issues may be related to a cancer. It is only your own doctor who can assess you to arrange the most appropriate tests to get answers.

Symptoms often have more than one cause which is why it can sometimes it can be a process of elimination for doctors to get to the root cause. This is especially the case when someone has several symptoms if different places in the body.

It sounds like you have had a significant amount of tests carried out and it is reassuring that nothing serious has been picked up.

I hope your scan goes okay tomorrow and that you are able to get some answers in regards to your pain.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
