Breast lump - scared

Hi. Since I turned 40 in July, I've noticed a hard round lump on my left breast that is more prominent when I am lying down and when i raise my arm. It is very movable and I can see it move under the skin when i move it. It seems to be linked to my menstrual cycle as I'm fairly sure it does shrink after my period but am still a bit worried. Any help and reassurance would be appreciated. I will wait until after my period and if it hasn't changed I will go to the doctor.

  • I have noticed no other changes in my breast apart from this and am otherwise in excellent health.

  • Hello, and thank you for posting.

Anyone who notices something new or different for them should get checked out by their GP. They will review the lump and decide if it needs investigation. If they think it does, they may refer you to the breast clinic to get the lump looked at further.

Tell the doctor what you have felt and noticed, alongside your monthly cycle, as other things can happen in the breast that aren't cancer. But, it is still good to be checked, so do go along once your period finishes

Take care, and hopefully you will know more soon. If you want to speak to the nurses on the helpline the number is 0808 800 4040, lines open mon-fri, 9-5.

    Sarah.

    Hi Kitten,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I'm delighted to hear that you picked up the courage to see about this lump. If it does turn out to be cancer, the sooner it is attended to, the better the outcome should be. Having said this, only 20% of the people who attend the breast clinic, get a cancer diagnosis, as many lumps are benign. Some turn out to be benign cysts or fibroadenoma. Some lumps do change with your menstrual cycle, so here's hoping that it turns out to be nothing serious.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hello kitten85 and thanks for your post,

It is good to hear that you are having your breast lump checked in a breast clinic.

Breast Cancer Now have some useful information about what happens at a breast clinic appointment which you might find helpful to read before hand.

There are many benign (not cancer) breast conditions that women can get so try not to overthink it for now.

If you would like to ring and chat through any of this with one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to give us a call.

The number to ring is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
